What is Franciacorta?

Franciacorta DOCG uses the same traditional method as Champagne — Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, and Pinot Bianco, second fermentation in the bottle. The region covers rolling hills between Lake Iseo and Brescia, with 120+ wineries. The wines rival the French originals but cost less and draw fewer crowds.

Top Wineries to Visit

Most wineries require advance booking, but some accept walk-ins. Ca' del Bosco is the biggest name (book 2 weeks ahead). Bellavista has stunning architecture. For a more intimate experience, try Ferghettina or Barone Pizzini (Italy's first organic Franciacorta). Expect €15-30 per tasting.

A Suggested Route

Start at Erbusco (the wine capital), visit 2-3 wineries in the morning, lunch at a local agriturismo, then one more tasting in the afternoon. Drive through the vineyards between Adro, Corte Franca, and Provaglio — the scenery between stops is half the fun.

Food Pairings

Franciacorta Satèn (the creamiest style) pairs brilliantly with local salumi and Bagòss cheese. Rosé versions go well with lake fish from nearby Iseo. Most wineries offer food pairings with their tastings.

Practical Tips

  • Designate a driver or book a wine tour with transport
  • Book wineries at least 3-4 days ahead in high season (May-October)
  • Buy bottles at the cellar door — prices are 20-30% less than shops
